SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemeni troops battling al-Qaida fighters in the country’s south have forced them to retreat but military officials said Thursday the push in a major southern city is going slowly because of concerns the militants could stage a surprise counterattack.
The military, backed by heavy artillery and warplanes, is advancing inside the city of Zinjibar, the provincial capital of Abyan, the officials said. The city fell into al-Qaida’s hands during last year’s popular uprising against the now ousted leader Ali Abdullah Saleh.
Zinjibar’s capture would deal a heavy blow to al-Qaida as it would leave the terror group’s fighters scattered in smaller towns and mountain areas of the south.
The push in Zinjibar is part of Yemen’s offensive along several fronts to uproot al-Qaida from its southern strongholds at a time when the U.S. has thrown its support behind the new Yemeni president and Saleh’s successor, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.
Hadi has vowed to combat al-Qaida by restructuring the military and replacing Saleh’s loyalists from key posts, though there are concerns that Saleh, who stepped down in February, is still obstructing reforms and trying to retain influence through his cronies.
The latest offensive began Tuesday, with the military using warplanes and heavy artillery to clear the way for an assault by ground troops on towns where al-Qaida fighters are either operating or in control.
Yemen’s army is receiving direct help from U.S. troops, who are operating from a desert air base near the main battle zones to help coordinate assaults and airstrikes, according to Yemeni officials.
The officials said it was the most direct American involvement yet in the country’s expanding campaign against al-Qaida’s branch in Yemen, which has been blamed for directing a string of unsuccessful bomb plots on U.S. soil from its hideouts in the impoverished country at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula.
On Wednesday, President Barack Obama signed an executive order allowing the Treasury Department to freeze the U.S.-based assets of individuals who the White House says “threaten the peace, security and stability” of Yemen. The order was meant as a deterrent against future action and does not immediately levy any penalties against specific people or organizations.
On Thursday, Yemeni officials said the military intelligence in Zinjibar was poor and that army commanders were unsure whether most of the al-Qaida fighters there have been killed, simply fled the battle or retreated for tactical reasons and were preparing a counteroffensive.
To the east of Zinjibar, Yemeni military officials said a suspected U.S. drone-fired missile struck two moving vehicles in the city of Shibam in the southern Hadramawt province. The officials said the strike destroyed one of the vehicles, killed its three occupants who were believed to be linked to al-Qaida, and wounded two in the second car.
Also in the south, bodies of 11 Yemeni army soldiers and civilian volunteers fighting alongside the military were found after al-Qaida retreated from the area near the city of Lawder, officials said. The victims were believed to have been killed execution-style, they said.
“Most of the areas surrounding Lawder are clear of al-Qaida now,” one military official said.
All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

It’s been hundreds of years since the Tasmanian devil last lived on the Australian mainland but, in the misty hills of Barrington Tops, a pioneering group is being bred for survival.
Rat-like in appearance but with a marsupial pouch and carnivorous jaws that can crack bone, Tasmanian devils are an enigmatic Australian species.
They are reclusive creatures who sleep by day and forage by night, and are best known for the guttural cries which saw the early British settlers call them “devils” and inspired a Warner Bros. cartoon character.
But the burrowing, tree-climbing animals are in a battle for survival against an aggressive and contagious facial cancer which experts fear could see them become extinct in the wild in as little as five years.
“Its viability at present seems critical,” said conservationist Tim Faulkner of the animal.
“In 1996 the disease was first found — since then you’ve had a 91 percent population decrease,” Faulkner, who is based at the Australian Reptile Park, said.
“There’s no sign of a cure, there’s no sign of a vaccine and there’s no sign of the disease slowing up.”
Devil facial tumour disease has seen the animals plunge from a pest species to endangered in a very short period, with Faulkner estimating their numbers — once in excess of 250,000 — in the “low tens of thousands.”
They once roamed Australia but since about 1600 have been isolated to Tasmania, an island state south of the mainland, where a series of disease outbreaks has seen their genetic stocks severely diminished.
The cancer, which typically causes death within three to six months, is spread during fighting over food and territory, when a healthy devil will bite an infected devil’s face and pick up cancer cells.
Because the devils are so inbred their immune systems fail to recognise the cancer cell as foreign and don’t fight it off, according to geneticist Kathy Belov, who describes the animals as “immunological clones”.
Belov’s team at the University of Sydney are studying the tumour in search of a vaccine or cure, but she believes cataloguing the genes of healthy animals and selectively breeding them in captivity is the devils’ best hope.
“In 30 years’ time, a few generations down the track, we want devils that we can release back into the wild that can hunt and can fend for themselves,” Belov told AFP.
“We want to have devils that behave like wild animals, but not to lose any of that (genetic) diversity, and that’s going to be the challenge.”
Enter “Devil Ark” — 500 hectares (1,236 acres) of farmland set in pristine national park which was gifted to the Tasmanian devil conservation movement by the wealthy Packer family of casino and media fortunes.
Situated in remote and mountainous alpine forest very similar to the devils’ natural habitat, Devil Ark is what keeper Adrian Good describes as a “free-range” captive breeding project.
Devils are kept in densely vegetated pens of between two and three football fields in size enclosed by a climb and burrow-proof fence, and their pen mates are chosen by experts from a genetic “stud book” to optimise breeding.
Their lives are designed to closely mirror those of wild devils; they are left a kangaroo or other carcass to eat in the evenings and will sleep through the day.
Each pen contains between six and 10 devils, with an even mix of males and females, and Good said there had been excellent breeding success last year, which was the Ark’s first year of operation, with 24 babies — or “joeys” — born.
“They just love being here, all the signs are that they are happy and healthy devils,” he said.
Social dominance is a constant battle in the wild and Devil Ark is no different — having to share their territory with others forces the devils to fight for their food and mating rights, skills they can quickly lose in a zoo.
“Those wild traits are crucial for them being able to survive when they’re re-released,” said Good.
There are currently just under 100 devils living at the Ark and keepers are targeting 350 by 2016, with plans for as many as 1,000 in the years after that to be trickled back into Tasmania once the wild population dies out.
The Australian Reptile Park’s Faulkner is overseeing the project and said it was unique in the world because unlike most other endangered species captive-bred devils would be able to be returned to their habitat.
“Its environment’s pristine, feral predators aren’t a problem, if we can just get past the disease you can put them back and it literally has a happy ending,” he said.
Belov said there would be valuable lessons for the management of other vulnerable native species, including the koala.
“I think we have to learn from the devil, this disease simply couldn’t have spread like it has had there been more genetic diversity,” she said.
“It’s a warning for us because we have a lot of wildlife populations that are isolated… and that’s where you have problems.”

This is one of many similar stories we are hearing: small business employees do anything and everything that?s needed to get the job done and make their companies successful. But, they need help saving time on all the administrative tasks they do ? especially in the back-office ? so they can get back to serving their customers and building their business.
As I continue to have these conversations, it is reinforced for me that small businesses are the backbone of the American Economy. According to the Small Business Association (SBA), small businesses create two-thirds of net new jobs in the U.S., and over half of all working Americans either own or work for a small business. And as there is still tremendous ongoing pressure and uncertainty, adversity is nothing new for our small business customers.? And they, along with their employees, are stretching themselves to the limit as they look to grow their businesses with hard work and dedication. In talking to small business folks, this small business balancing act definitely comes to life for me. I know technology can help small businesses manage some of this burden ? which is why we?re working so hard to make Deem at Work a time- and money-saving solution for small businesses.
I?m excited to be attending this week?s San Francisco Small Businesses Week, recognizing the ?Heroes of Our Economy? and celebrating the contributions small businesses make to our cities and towns. Small businesses are coming together to collaborate, join forces and inspire each other ? finding ways to not only survive but to thrive. Do you really wonder if SEO can help your website? What kind of results can you expect from paying to have some SEO done for your website and will it make a difference? Search engine optimization has already been proven time and time again to help floundering or lost websites to become profitable for business owners. The only real question remains is whether the SEO company that you?re looking at can deliver the goods and what will this mean to your business?
The truth is that there are a lot of very big SEO companies out there charging a ton of money while promising absolutely nothing. They will tell you that SEO is very complicated or that there are no guarantees. They will tell you that search engines change the rules all the time and that there is no telling what will work tomorrow when it comes to SEO.
If you believe all of this then I have a bridge to sell you in New York. Anyone that says that search engine optimization is difficult just doesn?t know what they?re doing. It?s hard work but that?s what you?re paying someone for, right? You don?t care how it?s done. You just want to see results. You want to feel some confidence in knowing that the company that you hire is going to keep on working until your website is in one of those top spots for the keywords that are going to help your business. You don?t want to hear excuses before you?ve even signed a contract.
Before you do anything, do a little research into what can be accomplished with SEO and the reputation of the firm that you?re thinking of hiring. Have they been successful in the past and can they prove it? Have them give you an example of some keyword research that they might offer to you and will these keywords bring you paying customers at the end of the day? Don?t be afraid to ask question and if something doesn?t seem right then ask for clarification. Just because a company is big or has a good reputation or has received awards, that doesn?t make them gods when it comes to SEO. I?ve seem many SEO jobs completely miss their mark by supposedly top notch SEO firms.
What?s the payoff? What should you expect from a good SEO company and how can they help your business? With some certainty you should know that they should be able to rank your website in one of the top three spots for at least one buyer keyword within three months. If they aren?t able to do that then they?re holding back on you. As a result, you should see an increase in business in the form of your phone ringing more or more people walking in your door as if by magic.
Often it doesn?t take checking SERP rankings to know when your site has hit number one for a certain keyword. You will know when it happens because things get crazy real quick. You will think that there must be something wrong because your phone will be ringing more than ever and this kind of spike in business can be exhilarating and addictive after the first time you?ve experienced it.
In the end you really need to do your homework. Don?t forget that most of these people are in advertising and they don?t have a problem with bending the truth at least a little bit to get you on board as a client. Use some common sense and don?t feel pressured. As all the questions that you want and be prepared for some honest answers. Look for someone or a company that doesn?t find the need to brag about awards but instead listen to their past customers to get a feel for whether they know what they?re doing or not when it comes to SEO.

Wadi Al-Hitan, Whale Valley is an important natural reserve 150 km remote prehistoric site, about 200 km southwest of Cairo and in the Western Desert of Egypt. Wadi Al-Hitan, Whale Valley is also known for scientists as the Zeuglodon Valley, have been discovered in 1936. The first fossil skeletons of whales were discovered in the winter of 1902-3, it attracted little interest, due to the difficulty of reaching the area. The valley is located behind a mountain, known as Garet Gohannam, (gara) means hill or mountain and Garet Gohannam means the mountain of hell. In the light of the setting sun, the mountain seems ablaze with an eerie red light drawing a fascinating scene. Wadi Al-Hitan contains hundreds of invaluable fossil remains of the earliest, and now extinct, suborder of whales, the archaeoceti are being exposed by the wind and now have been discovered giving the valley its name. Wadi Al-Hitan is of important paleontological interest due to the existence of wide variety of fossilized flora and fauna and the most important site in the world to demonstrate one of the major stories of evolution of the whales. According to the World Conservation Union, Valley of the whales is the most significant site in the world to demonstrate the evolution of whales.
The site is considered as an open museum, owes important 40 million year-old whale skeletons emergening from a previous life as land animals to a marine existence. A fossil display the typical streamlined body of the whales and ancestors of the modern day whales, whilst retaining certain primitive aspects of skull and tooth structure. The fossils of Al-Hitan demonstrated the youngest archaeocetes in the last stages of losing their hind limbs and vividly the form and life of these whales during their transition. The Whales lie trapped in a big number ( about 400 rare fossils of whales), concentration and quality in a sandstone formation that represents an ancient sea bed which is unique, as their accessibility and setting is in an attractive and protected landscape, no other place in the world yields so.
Wadi Al-Hitan today is a Protected area and was inscribed and cited as a World Heritage Site on 15th July 2005 due to the presence of a big number fossils and other early fossil material and animals such as sharks, shark teeth, crocodiles, sawfish, turtles , rays, shells and roots of Mangroves preserved in soft rocks. Petrified sea shell and corals are every where. The site makes it possible to reconstruct the surrounding environmental and ecological conditions of the time.
Wadi El-Hitan is characterized by its integrated desert environment consisting of existence of movable sand dunes, four natural sulfuric springs , different wild animals and important and various sea fossils. Wadi El-Hitan is also home to 15 species of desert plants and about 15 types of wild mammals including the North African jackal, red fox, fennec fox ( sand fox ), Egyptian mongoose, African wildcat, the white deer, the Egyptian deer, dorcas gazelle ,and others, and 16 species of reptiles , and over 100 species of resident and migrating birds.
There are nomuch wadi Al-Hitan Guided Tours, only about 1,000 visitors a year expecially on winter weekends drive into wadi Al-Hitan by 4WD due to the fact that the track is unpaved and crosses unmarked desert sands.
